The Effects of Repeated Prescribed Burning , ~ on Pinus ponderosa Growth

چکیده
The effect of repeated prescribed burning on long term growth of Pinus ponderosa in northern Arizona wasexamined. Fire treatments for hazard reduction were initiatedin 1976,and growth was evaluated in 1988 for fire rotations of 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 years. Dendroecological analysis shows that there were only small changes in treegrowth (compared tocontrols) in the first few years after the initial fire treatment despite large fuel reductions and thinning, and that annual precipitation was positively correlated with growth. Moderate changes in growth relative to that of control trees were apparent after 1984.The 1-,2-,8-,and 10-year treatments had lower growth than controls after this date, while 4and 6-year treatments had slightly higher growth. Although additionaldataareneeded todetermine long term growth effectsin the longer firerotations,a fire treament interval of 4 to 6 years appears to provide adequate fuel reduction without reducing long term growth in Southwestern P. ponderosa forests.

Response of antelope bitterbrush to repeated prescribed burning in Central Oregon ponderosa pine forests
Antelope bitterbrush is a dominant shrub in many interior ponderosa pine forests in the western United States. How it responds to prescribed fire is not well understood, yet is of considerable concern towildlife and fire managers alike given its importance as a browse species and as a ladder fuel in these fire-prone forests. We quantified bitterbrush cover, density, and biomass in response to re...

Low elevation ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex. Laws.) forests of the northern Rocky Mountains historically experienced frequent, low intensity fires that maintained open, uneven-aged stands. A century of fire suppression has led to denser ponderosa pine forests with higher competition for resources, higher tree stress, and greater risk of insect attack and stand destroying fire. Activ...

numerous studies have documented a temporary decrease in growth following prescribed burning (e.g., Landsberg et al. 1984, Grier 1989, Sutherland et al. 1991, Peterson et al. 1994, Busse et al. 2000), whereas other studies have reported a positive growth response in ponderosa pine (Wyant et al. 1983, Skov et al. 2005), giant sequoia (Mutch and Swetnam 1995), and Douglas-fir (Reinhardt and Ryan ...

The effects of prescribed underburning on soil total C pools, total and inorganic N pools, and in situ net N mineralization were examined during a 1-year study in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex P. & C. Laws.) sites that had been experimentally burned 4 months, 5 years, or 12 years earlier. At the sites burned 4 months previously, total C concentration and inorganic N concentration in...
